Many of the photographs survived as extremely fragile glass negatives—some salvaged from dusty barns.
The photographs have been scanned and brought to new life in this beautifully printed, 104-page coffee table book featuring over 100 photographs.
This book provides a lens into the daily lives of Mennonite settlers on the prairies, and challenges our assumptions.
Along with an extensive coffee table book, these photographs will be printed in large format and displayed in galleries throughout Manitoba, and beyond, including Gallery in the Park, Mennonite Heritage Centre, and Mennonite Heritage Village, beginning in June 2020.
Some images in the collection feature self-portraits of the photographers, such as the one above of P. H. Klippenstein (1878–1960) with his family. Other photographers include P. G. Hamm (1883–1965), H. D. Fast (1894–1977), and J. E. Funk (1878–1968).
